Good to know
- Profeco said on November 5 that shoppers should look up sellers in its Buró Comercial before El Buen Fin. Its checks for the campaign run November 13 to 17.
- On November 5, the register had 1,103 named listings under hotels, 697 under timeshares and 26 under guesthouses and furnished apartments.
- Listings are rows, not companies: one business can sit in several categories or have several rows, so the counts can't be added together.
- It covers complaints from January 1, 2019, to September 30, 2026. Profeco says it does not reflect every complaint it has received.
- A complaint is a claim, not a ruling, and the register shows no customer numbers. It is public, so readers can look up a business themselves.
Mexico's consumer agency, Profeco, told shoppers on November 5 to look up sellers in its online complaint register, the Buró Comercial, before buying in El Buen Fin, a sales campaign now in its 16th edition. The release says the register covers more than 270 business categories; its examples run from department stores to restaurants and don't mention lodging. The register does have categories for lodging, so we counted the listings in them the same day. Our timeshare guide mentions the register; the counts below are new.
What the register shows for lodging
The register covers complaints from January 1, 2019, to September 30, 2026, and lists businesses with complaints in that period. The table shows the categories closest to a trip, under the labels used in its search box, with the number of named listings each had on November 5.
| Category, as the register labels it | In English | Named listings |
|---|---|---|
| Hoteles, moteles y similares | Hotels, motels and similar businesses | 1,103 |
| Empresas de tiempo compartido | Timeshare companies | 697 |
| Pensiones, casas de huéspedes, deptos. y casas amuebladas con serv. de hotelería | Guesthouses and furnished apartments or houses with hotel services | 26 |
| Agencias de viajes y servicios de reservaciones | Travel agencies and reservation services | 3,703 |
These counts need care. A business can sit in several categories, and one group or name can have several rows: in the timeshare category, four trade names appear on more than one listing. So the totals don't count separate companies. Each list also has one row grouping complaints against individuals, whose names Profeco withholds; we left that row out of the counts.
A listing also says little on its own. In the register's figures, 267 of the 697 timeshare listings and 21 of the 26 guesthouse listings showed a single complaint since 2019, and a listing's total may include more than lodging. A complaint is a claim, not a ruling against a business. The register doesn't show how many customers a business serves, so raw totals don't compare businesses by size. Profeco says the register doesn't reflect every complaint it has received, only those that have concluded or whose details may be released, and that results can vary because of data-entry errors.
This story names no business. The register is public, so a reader can look up a specific hotel, timeshare or rental there.
How Profeco says to use it
Profeco's release says to enter the trade or legal name without accents or punctuation, choose the business category and search; a report appears if there are complaints. The register's page says to check the name against the one on an invoice, receipt or email. The same page sends users to a separate Profeco register to see whether a business has a registered standard contract. Our timeshare guide explains why that matters for timeshare sales.
What a report contains
A report is shown year by year. It gives complaints received and concluded. Concluded complaints divide into those settled at a conciliation hearing, those not settled there, and those closed for other reasons, a heading Profeco uses for complaints that were inadmissible, canceled or withdrawn. A settlement is an agreement between the two sides, not a finding against either. The report also lists the main reasons for complaints; those are customers' claims, not findings.
El Buen Fin, and what is not in the plan
In its October 29 announcement, Profeco said more than 1,000 staff in 350 brigades would work across the country from November 13 to 17, with 169 service points in busy areas. It is also monitoring online stores and social media, and says its Quién es Quién en los Precios site has tracked more than 490 products since September. Neither release mentions hotels or travel, or says lodging deals will get special attention.
Profeco says it will take complaints during the campaign on 55 5568 8722 and 800 468 8722. The general rules on what a hotel or rental must show and honor are in our booking guide. Profeco is the body for an individual case.
